This game does not use scoring or points. The objective of the game is to hit the target number in fewer than twenty turns.

2. The game begins by generating a 3-digit target number, e.g. 831. This represents the pinata. A second 3-digit number represents the starting point, e.g. 467.

3. The starting number is visualised by a line of ducks representing hundreds, goats representing tens and bunnies representing ones, e.g. for 467, it would be 2 ducks, 3 goats and 1 bunny.

4. The target and starting point numbers are also shown on a number line at the bottom of the screen. This can be closed at any time.

5. In Level 1, the aim is to add or subtract numbers to your starting point to reach the target. The class should discuss what they think they need to reach the target.

6. Use the Go button to generate a random number between 0 and 9. Students can then choose to add or subtract this many ones, tens or hundreds to help reach the target. For example, if they roll a 4, they can add or subtract 4 ones, 4 tens or 4 hundreds. Students should discuss the best number to add or subtract. For example, adding 40 is reflected on the number line and 4 "tens" goats add themselves to the piñata line to reflect the changed values.

What You Need

• Pinata filled with sweets/trinkets
• Blindfold
• Stick or baseball bat
• Somewhere to suspend the pinata
• Plenty of space without breakable objects nearby

How to Play Pinatas

• 1. Using the instructions that came with your piñata, attach the piñata to a tree branch, beam, climbing frame or any other suitable hanging place.
• 2. Place the piñata at a height that will allow it to swing freely and where the guests can reach it with the stick.
• 3. Line everyone up at least 10 feet or so from the piñata.
• 4. Blindfold the first person and give them the stick.
• 5. Bring them within about 3 feet of the piñata and ask them to try and hit it with the aim of breaking it. Older kids could also be turned around a couple of times on the spot so that they are a bit disoriented. This makes it harder for them to know where the piñata is
• 6. Each child then gets a turn, or possibly several, to try and hit the piñata. Normally people are a bit unsure and timid at first, but once they get the hang of it there's no stopping them!
• 7. NOTE: Don't let the children who are waiting in line move forward towards the hitter, as a blindfolded child with a swinging bat can be quite dangerous.
• 8. As soon as the piñata breaks open and the treats shower down, the children can scramble to pick up the goodies.
• 9. It can turn into quite a scramble, which can be a bit frightening for the younger children, so make sure that you have a bit of control over the scramble and that everyone gets their fair share of treats.
